about

With several albums released on the label Metronomicon Audio, and even more releases on the obscure Micronomicon label, Magnus Moriarty™ is everything but a newcomer. His debut was the 2001 MiniDisc release The Sickness Tapes. Issued in only one copy, this limited edition album contained songs recorded during a period where Magnus Moriarty™ had to stay indoors as a result of coming down with mononucleosis. His friend Ergo was impressed by these lo-fi gems inspired by cough syrup and has been Moriarty™'s co-pilot ever since, in the recording studio and on stage.

Magnus Moriarty™ began working on the album Perhaps Interior Heart Politeness in 2007. After recording the basics, the work was put on hold for a while. Moriarty™ enjoyed his new life as a father and Ergo focused on various other projects. In the spring of 2008, Magnus Moriarty™ returned to the studio to finish the album.

Perhaps Interior Heart Politeness is an album packed with melodic indie folk rock. A pan-galactic journey inspired by the 70’s folk and prog rock, as well as classical composers like Prokofiev and Norway’s own national composer Edvard Grieg. Romantic violins and futuristic analog synthesizers dance side by side with rhythmic acoustic guitars and galloping drums. At the centre of the soundscape we find Moriarty™'s voice, conveying a lyric universe revolving around kite flying, whales in outer space and black holes of love.

The album was recorded on an old fashioned Tascam tape recorder in Metronomicon's own studio in Oslo, rendering its organic and warm sound. Yet, this is not a purely nostalgic retro record. To the extent that it is, Perhaps Interior Heart Politeness yearns farther back in time than to the 1960’s or 70’s. Entitling one of the songs So Five Lightyears Ago, here lies Moriarty™’s avowal that the music on the album stems from an era long lost.
